If you haven’t been to see the Mary Rose, now is your opportunity. Henry VIII’s mighty flagship sank nearly 500 years ago. Now she has been brought to the surface and painstakingly restored inch by inch by specialists with the aid of modern technology and expert knowledge.
A specially designed building enables you to view every part of the ship and the artefacts that sank with her: a time capsule of seafaring life in the 16th century.
We are lucky to be visiting at the time a complementary boat trip round the harbour is included in the price of the ticket. In the time remaining we leave you to decide your own itinerary. There is Nelson’s ship, the Victory, other ships, the Spinnacker Tower and various museums covering aspects of seafaring. But if you feel like exploring, Old Portsmouth is very interesting and you could stroll along the Hot Walls, as the massive harbour fortifications are called.
Do bear in mind that there may be cobblestones on the quay, so think about your shoes. There are cafés and restaurants near by for a cup of coffee or your lunch.
