George III bought Frogmore for his wife, Queen Charlotte, and the Royal Family have treasured it ever since as a peaceful country retreat where they can pursue their hobbies and enjoy picnics in the grounds. Although they do not reside there, the Royal Family do use Frogmore for special family occasions and entertaining.
Although the mausoleum is not open to the public, we can wander round the grounds at our leisure and take in the many follies and other features. There are plenty of seats and picnicking is permitted. We have booked a Blue Badge guide to take us on a tour round the gardens.
There is plenty of interest to see in the house, too: one of the rooms has been fitted out by Prince Philip with furnishings he rescued from the Royal Yacht Britannia when she was decommissioned. There is also a small museum of things collected by the family as souvenirs.
As an all-inclusive rate was not available, entrance to the house will cost a further £6.50, payable at the door in cash. There are plenty of seats, and picnicking is permitted, or there is a café where you can get a light lunch.
