Escape to the countryside and spend a day out at Waddesdon Manor, a French Renaissance-style château, built in the 1870s by Baron Ferdinand de Rothschild to entertain the fashionable world, and to house his impressive art collection, including English portraits, Dutch Old Masters and French decorative arts. It is a National Trust property managed by the Rothschild Foundation.
The gardens at Waddesdon are an exceptional example of Victorian Horticulture, including formal gardens, trees and walks. Highlights include an iconic Victorian parterre famed for its seasonal bedding, and an ornate Rococo-style aviary conserving rare birds. The impressive wine cellars at Waddesdon store an historical collection of more than 15,000 bottles, the most extensive collection of Château Lafite Rothschild of Bordeaux.
There is a gift and wine shop, as well as a variety of places to eat …. or you can bring your own picnic.
You will then have plenty of time to enjoy the experience of walking around the house and, those who are able, can visit
the cellars with its extensive range of wines and read stories relating to some of the bottles.
The wine cellars in the Manor were created during the centenary restoration and opened in 1994. They are modelled on the private cellars at Château Lafite Rothschild. More than 15,000 bottles are stored in the cellars, some 150 years old, the majority from the Château Lafite Rothschild and Château Mouton Rothschild estates. It is the largest private collection of Rothschild wines in the world.
