Membership of Dorking & District U3A has been increasing of late – no doubt aided by the successful Open Day. This has meant that some groups have not been able to accommodate everyone who would like to participate.
We have removed much of the pressure by establishing second groups for French Conversation, Creative Writing, Photography, Gardening and Pilates (in this case a fourth group).
We are also contemplating a second group for Art Appreciation. This has proved to be so popular that the group is currently closed to new members. A second group could be set up if there is sufficient interest, and the groups co-ordinators are keen to discuss the details with members as soon as possible. So do record your interest with Lionel (in the first instance) by e-mailing eljaysee@ljcartlidge.co.uk or telephoning 01306 898491.
Opera Appreciation was a popular subject but the group closed when its inspirational leader died. It could once again become a popular group provided we can identify a small group of members (two to four would be best) to start it off. Prior knowledge is not a necessary requirement as there will be good support and material from the U3A Resources Centre. A love of or, at least, an interest in opera will be all that will be needed to get things started. Get in touch with Lionel or Penny Tompkins (penny@cliffhanger.org.uk, telephone 01483 203288).
The ukulele is an increasingly popular instrument (many of you will have enjoyed the performances of Ukulele Orchestra of Great Britain at Dorking Halls and elsewhere). We would like to look into the possibility of setting up a new group for beginners and early learners. We will have to find a member who will be prepared to offer some guidance and instruction and then we will follow up with more detailed proposals. So, if you are able and willing to help, please contact Lionel or Penny.
Up to now we have been able to join theatre visits organised by Bookham U3A. Their arrangements have ended and it would be highly desirable to offer occasional organised trips ourselves. It needs one or more members to take on the organisation and there is no reason why the work involved should not be shared. If anybody enjoys the theatre and would be willing to contribute please let Lionel or Penny know.
We are always open to suggestions for new groups so do not hesitate to send them to any of us: Penny Tompkins, Lionel Cartlidge and Geoff Saunders.
