Being absolutely fascinated by our local surroundings we joined the u3a Local History Group. We enjoyed the variety of topics for discussion and became completely hooked.
We have discovered many interesting facts along the way. Did you know that famous people including Sir Lawrence Olivier, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Thomas Cubitt and William Mullins are associated with Dorking?
Dorking lime was considered by many to be the best in the country and was used in the mortar for the Bank of England and Somerset House. Its hardening qualities in water were so good that it was also used in the construction of the London Docks and West India Docks in the Port of London.
We have discussed industry, shops, pubs and recently held a film show of Coronation events through the years, having researched documents and photographs.
If you wish to expand your knowledge of Dorking and the surrounding area, please contact Val or Paul for further info.
