Many of you will remember that fictional TV detective Inspector Morse was an avid crossword enthusiast. His creator Colin Dexter, who as well as being an author, actually set cryptic crosswords, remarked that crossword solving was the only one of Morse’s vices that prolonged his life! As we get older it is important to do all that we can to maintain and improve cognitive functions and memory. Mental challenges and social interactions are a great way to do this and all of these elements come together in the D&D U3A Cryptic Crossword Group.
A small group of crossword enthusiasts (cruciverbalists) meet to work together to solve a cryptic crossword – while learning from each other and improving our skills. Cryptic crosswords are typically found in the broadsheet newspapers and some magazines. Solving them involves reading the clues the right way and understanding (and recognising!) the crossword conventions within the clue.
