The Purcell Club historical/musical tour
Having waited several years for this extremely limited opportunity (there are only 10 such tours each year), we have finally been able to secure a musical tour of Westminster Abbey by a speaker and members of the Purcell Club. The club is a male voice choir formed predominantly from members of the Westminster Abbey Old Choristers Association and is named after Henry Purcell, who was organist at Westminster Abbey from 1679-95.
Before the tour we plan to have a two-course meal with tea or coffee in the Cellarium Café within the cloisters at the abbey (see menu below).
After dinner we meet in the cloisters for a welcome by a member of the Purcell Club and then move into the nave for the beginning of the tour when the first piece of music is sung. The speaker describes the history and architecture of the abbey in some detail before moving from one location of interest to another, and at various points there is a pause for members of the Purcell Club to sing suitable musical items. The final part of the tour returns to the nave where we can enjoy a short organ recital by one of the abbey’s organists to demonstrate the instrument’s versatility and power.
The whole experience will last for about three hours and offers a unique way of seeing the abbey in the quiet of the evening when it is not open to the general public.
