St Albans is named after a Roman soldier who was martyred for sheltering a Christian priest in the third century when a Roman town called Verulanium stood where St Albans stands now. The museum contains many Roman artefacts together with a model of the third century Verulanium.
There is a great deal to see and admire in the magnificent cathedral which is supported on massive Norman piers decorated with 13th and 14th century paintings.
French Row is a medieval street, now pedestrianised, where you can explore antique shops to your heart’s content.
This is a ‘go as you please’ day in an attractive town with some steep hills, so come with comfortable shoes.
