Shoreham Airport, renamed Brighton City Airport in 2013, was first used for flights as early as 1910 and thereafter it became increasingly important both locally and nationally and is still regarded as one of the airports at the forefront of general aviation in this country. Aimed at aviation enthusiasts, history buffs and photographers alike, the guided tour of the airport includes visiting Grade II-listed buildings such as the historic hangar and the art deco main terminal building.
You can bring your own packed lunch or you can visit the Hummingbird Restaurant to sample its home-cooked food.
After lunch we will visit Lancing College Chapel, the foundation stone of which was laid in July 1868 so it is celebrating its 150th anniversary this year. Built in the Victorian Gothic Revival style, it is the largest school chapel in the world and a landmark for miles around. It is one of the tallest interior vaulted churches in the UK and its rose window, finally completed in 1977, is the largest in England and featured in the Harry Potter films. We will be provided with a guided tour by the verger, Andrew Wynn-MacKenzie.
We expect to leave for home at about 4.15pm.
