Our Culture Companions group visits Dorking’s Green Room Theatre to see the DDOS production of Rent, a contemporary rock musical based on La Bohème that tells the story of a group of struggling young artists and musicians in New York during the height of the Aids epidemic.
The narrative revolves around filmmaker Mark Cohen and his friends as they navigate love, loss, and the harsh realities of life in the city. Key characters include Mark’s roommate Roger, an HIV-positive musician; Mimi, a dancer and Roger’s love interest; Collins, a philosopher who falls in love with Angel, a drag queen and street musician; and Maureen, a performance artist, and her lawyer girlfriend Joanne.
The musical explores themes of friendship, poverty, illness, and the importance of living life to its fullest despite the challenges.
