Many industrial archaeology societies have just achieved their half-century, and in 2023 the Association for Industrial Archaeology will also achieve that milestone. After a period of rapid growth in the 1970s and 1980s due to the role played by adult education classes the societies are now more mature.
However, most are struggling from the after-effects of Covid that led to many sites closing, some permanently. Some practitioners stood down and even library research became impossible. The discipline now needs to find new followers and new subjects. This study day will address some of these questions and maybe raise others.
