Melanie Gibson-Barton has visited and lived in Belgium for several years. She tells the story of Edith Cavell, the British First World War heroine. Edith was a nurse working in Brussels who saved the lives of soldiers from both sides and helped them escape from German-occupied Belgium. She was arrested and shot in 1915 by a German firing squad despite international pressure for mercy. Her execution received worldwide condemnation and press coverage.
