Beth Chatto’s garden
Beth Chatto (1923-2018) was a British plantswoman who pioneered the ‘right plant, right place’ approach to gardening. From 1960, she transformed an overgrown Essex wasteland into a Grade II-listed ecological garden covering more than seven acres.
The gardens include a large nursery with the majority of plants propagated from those in the garden and sold according to the planting conditions that suit them best.
We plan to have lunch in their large tearoom where there will be a choice of sandwiches, soup, salads, cakes and hot and cold beverages.

Colchester Castle
In the afternoon we plan to visit Colchester Museum, which is housed in Colchester Castle, the largest Norman keep in Europe. Constructed on the foundations of the Temple of Claudius, built when Colchester was the first Roman capital of Britain, the museum today reveals many fascinating layers of history to visitors.
Archaeological collections covering 2,500 years of history are beautifully showcased, including some of the most important Roman finds in Britain.
Cost: £65 to include coach, driver’s gratuity, entrance fees to the Beth Chatto Gardens and a guided visit to Colchester Museum
