The enthusiasm of 30 members was not dampened by the wet weather as our day out started with a coach tour of some of the London properties that had once belonged to American heiresses and their families. Our tour was enlivened by the witty commentary of our Blue Badge guide.
In the afternoon we visited Two Temple Place, home to William Waldorf Astor, one of the richest men of the Victorian age. We were in awe of the lavishly decorated rooms and staircase with its ebony pillars and literary friezes; but the real gems are the monumental stained-glass windows.
The house was also hosting the Glass Heart exhibition, showcasing an eclectic collection of glass from the 19th century.
