Tower Bridge flanked by the Shard and the Walkie-Talkie (Fenchurch Building)

This proved to be a wonderful prelude to the Christmas season. The coach journey to Greenwich was thankfully uneventful and our driver, the wonderful Matt, deposited us within easy reach of the Cutty Sark where we were to meet the guide. Many of us took advantage of the local facilities and had refreshments before meeting with our guide at 4pm to board our cruiser.
From then on it was pure magic because by now it was dusk and as the sky was so clear we were able to see not only the riverside buildings and bridges stunningly lit but also the tops of all the skyscrapers, particularly the Shard.

We disembarked at Westminster Bridge where we met our coach driver again and proceeded to undertake a spectacular one-hour tour of the Christmas illuminations, taking in the Houses of Parliament, Whitehall, Trafalgar Square and the shopping streets, all of which seemed to be trying to outdo each other. Bond Street was definitely the most breathtaking.
We then drove to Kennedy’s restaurant in Fulham where we had a most welcome fish and chip supper before driving back to Dorking.
Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves – one member saying, “I could do that all over again.” There were people who, for one reason or another, couldn’t go and we may well repeat the trip next December if that is at all possible.
