More than 60 people came to the Rialto Lounge for an evening of good food and drink, laughter, conviviality – and, oh yes, a quiz, writes Pat Smith.
With rounds on subjects as diverse as Song Lyrics, Around Dorking, Famous Third-Agers and Grand Finales it was clear that bookish knowledge was not going to help much. My favourite question was in the Trivia round, asking about the world record for the highest flying toast from a pop-up toaster; Donald Trump’s hairline also received attention. Dingbats and diploids caused despair, desperation and lateral thinking as people struggled with them throughout the evening.
Despite the banter a hard-fought battle developed, mostly between the line-dancers and Amici, the Latin for Today team. In the last two rounds Amici managed to edge forward and won by a single point (in our previous quiz they were beaten by a single point, so justice has been served). Ubi concordia, ibi victoria, as I’m sure they would say, and they seemed delighted to receive their valuable prizes of helium-filled U3A balloons.
Thanks to everyone who came along.
