Group leader Geoff Saunders reports from the Wine Appreciation group’s recent learning experience
A few of us braved the summer deluge to take up the kind invitation from the Vineyard in South Street to their summer tasting, hosted in the factory area at Denbies. But we were very well rewarded for our efforts! Such a magnificent array of wines on offer from near and far: 141 to be precise, and no, I didn’t try them all…
Faced with such a variety I decided to concentrate of grape varieties I don’t normally see from places I don’t normally consider. But I couldn’t resist some old favourites too. There was plenty here to inspire further investigation and to suggest future sessions for our Wine Appreciation group.
Was there a standout wine for me? Perhaps it was the Montepulciano d’Abruzzo from a small estate near Pescara, a rich and smooth variant of a wine more commonly associated with a regular Italian restaurant than great drinking. Excellent value.
