Members may be interested to learn that there is a Welcome the Refugees committee in Dorking, closely linked to its parent committee in Epsom. Its aim is to help refugees over the age of 18 who are seeking asylum in this country and are caught in the vortex between applying for it and getting it.
This can be a desperate time for people who have neither home nor income. Members of the committee befriend refugees, assist them with linguistic, legal, practical and informational problems, and help them to find short term, and very short term, emergency accommodation.
Dorking U3A member Jill Burberry has had her first taste of giving accommodation for four nights to a refugee and will be happy to pass on her limited first-hand experience if any member wants to get in touch at jburberry@talktalk.net.
