Christmas is nearly here and I for one haven’t even thought about presents, turkeys or decorations yet. But it is the time of year when we remember family and friends and make that extra effort to keep in touch with those we do not see on a regular basis.
It can be a difficult time for those on their own, made worse for anyone suffering from ill health.
This is one of the issues that regularly comes up for us in the U3A, as our membership is exclusively among the older generation. Since I took over as chairman in May I have heard of plenty of cases of members being ill or going into hospital and relying on wider family and friends to take them and collect them.
With this in mind we asked long-standing member Pam Toler to take up the post of welfare officer. She is now responsible for getting in touch with those who are recovering from an operation or suffering an illness, or just celebrating a special birthday or event.
We like to think of Dorking U3A as one big family, and we feel it is important for our members to know that we value them and are thinking of them in difficult times.
So please make sure that you let Pam know of anyone who would appreciate a call or a card from us. Pam can be contacted at pamtoler29@hotmail.co.uk or on 01306 882970.
This isn’t just for Christmas; it is for the whole year. Thanks to Pam for taking on the role, and thanks to all of you for remembering those who need a bit of TLC.
Merry Christmas to you all.
