Myths
The term 'myth' derives from a Greek word meaning a traditional story, but can also mean a story dealing with something significant. Many have ritual or religious significance, or relate stories of gods and heroes.
Some tell how the world or universe were created or how the world will end. Others help the reader to understand and handle life situations. There are many theories about why we have myths.
Our group started by taking stories from Celtic culture. Currently, our studies are centred on Greek and Roman myths. However, subjects such as virgin births take us into related stories in different cultures such as Christianity, Buddhism, Egyptian and Chinese.
From time to time, we break away from the classics a dip a toe into other treasure troves, perhaps Norse or American Indian, or discover Lords of Misrule or The Long Man of Wilmington. The scope is immense.
